On July 19, Hainan Provincial Development and Reform Commission announced on its official website the winning bid for the pre-feasibility study report of the Dongfang Airport project, with the Civil Aviation Airport Planning & Design Institute Co., Ltd. selected as the primary candidate. This marks a significant step forward in the preliminary work for the construction of Dongfang Airport.

The construction of Dongfang Airport is the foremost of the "three key tasks" in promoting the establishment of a free trade port in Dongfang City, Hainan Province. The airport is planned to cover an area of 14,000 mu (approximately 2,333 acres), with the airport proper occupying around 4,500 mu (approximately 750 acres). It will feature a 3,400-meter runway built to 4E standards, capable of accommodating Boeing 747 freighters, along with synchronized planning for terminal buildings and other infrastructure. Supporting facilities include an airport logistics zone, cold chain logistics center, express operation center, sorting center, special cargo handling center, and customs supervision area, comprehensively meeting cargo handling requirements.

The construction goal for Dongfang Airport is to achieve an annual passenger throughput of 4.5 million and a cargo throughput of 500,000 tons by 2035. The project also reserves space for future runway expansion to meet throughput demands projected to reach 10 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo by 2050.

The airport is positioned as a regional passenger and freight hub, aiming to develop into an international freight hub facing the two oceans, an aviation logistics center of Hainan Free Trade Port, and a comprehensive transportation and logistics node. Notably, Dongfang Airport has already achieved phased results, with the airport site officially approved.
