Xinmin Evening News Report - Recently, Shanghai Airport Group has signed multiple cooperation agreements with China Energy Engineering Group, China National Chemical Construction Investment Group, Jiangsu Yueda Group, and Henan Junheng Biotechnology among others. These partnerships aim to accelerate the layout of the new energy industry. The involved parties will leverage their respective strengths to jointly build a green aviation fuel industry chain, expedite the application of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in civil aviation, and propel Shanghai Airport toward higher levels of green and low-carbon development.

SAF is primarily synthesized from waste oils, agricultural and forestry residues, and urban waste. Compared to traditional fossil fuels, SAF can reduce carbon emissions by up to 85% from collection to final use. According to analyses by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the application of SAF is a key measure for carbon reduction in the aviation industry. The Civil Aviation Administration's "14th Five-Year Plan for Green Development in Civil Aviation" also aims to achieve significant breakthroughs in the commercial application of SAF, with a goal to consume over 50,000 tons during the period.

Since last year, Shanghai Airport has actively carried out preliminary planning and preparations for the application of SAF, in collaboration with entities such as China Eastern Airlines and China National Aviation Fuel. These efforts include research on policies, business processes, and customer demands. Going forward, Shanghai Airport will actively seek support in policies and regulations regarding SAF sales, storage, refueling, and duty-free issues, enhance the infrastructure for SAF refueling at the airport, and hasten the implementation and promotion of green energy at Shanghai Airport.

In recent years, Shanghai Airport has deeply embraced President Xi Jinping's important directives on promoting green and low-carbon development. By focusing on implementing the national dual-carbon strategy, the airport has actively explored new paths for green development. This has led to the creation of top-level design documents such as the "Shanghai Airport Carbon Peak and Neutrality Development Strategy" and the "Shanghai Green Airport Construction Plan (2020-2035)," improving the system for green airport construction and accelerating the implementation of key projects.

Achievements include the construction of an airport energy and carbon management platform, establishment of a green airport evaluation system model to support analytical decision-making for the airport’s green transformation, and the implementation of green construction standards in the Phase IV project of Pudong Airport, including efforts to create a "zero-carbon building" demonstration. The airport has also expanded the use of new energy equipment and vehicles, with new specialty vehicles and equipment using 100% new or clean energy, and advanced the construction of Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) replacement projects at airport stands. Additionally, the airport has undertaken distributed photovoltaic construction at two locations, pushing the economic and carbon reduction benefits to leading levels in the industry; developed two hydrogen energy application demonstration projects; introduced steam from the Laogang Waste Incineration Plant for airport heating to eliminate the use of natural gas; and built the first organic wet waste treatment center in civil aviation in China.

In 2023, both Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao airports were awarded the highest three-star "Dual Carbon Airport" rating by the China Civil Airports Association. Shanghai Airport Group, together with members of the airport community, aims to reduce carbon emissions by one million tons by 2035.
