Guangzhou Baiyun Airport expansion project has made new progress

Recently, the construction of the 36,000 square meter metal roof of the West Fourth Pier project of the third phase expansion project of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport has been completed favorably. The project has entered the interior decoration and electromechanical installation stage.

During the construction of the West Fourth Pier project, the Guangdong Airport Group Engineering Construction Command and the participating units overcame technical difficulties such as the connection between the West Fourth Pier and the West Fifth Pier and the production and installation of glass with hyperbolic surface shape on the roof.

The metal roof of the West Fourth Pier project is mainly composed of four systems: eaves aluminum plate system, upright lock edge metal roof panel system, rectangular skylight and triangular skylight. The total construction area is 36,000 square meters. Considering the local climate, the roof is equipped with windproof system and anti-fall system to ensure the relevant performance. The entire roof support system fully adapts to displacement changes caused by temperature changes, wind loads and seismic loads.

There were several technical difficulties during construction. Firstly, since the West Fourth Pier is connected to the already built West Fifth Pier, the two single-body designs are inconsistent. How to ensure that the roof of both piers is perfectly connected after construction is a major problem that requires strict control of the new pier to ensure that it is consistent with theoretical drawings and model requirements. Secondly, the roof of the West Fourth Pier has a hyperbolic surface shape. The roof panel itself has a certain amount of flexibility, while glass does not. If there is a large deviation, it cannot be installed. Moreover, each triangular glass plate has an inconsistent size. How to design glass partitions and solve deviations between hyperbolic glass and construction becomes a key point. In addition, there are many long-curved plates on the metal roof panel, and there are four different curved radii on each plate continuously. At present, bending machines cannot process this plate. How to deliver this part is also a major difficulty.

To solve these problems during project construction, in terms of hyperbolic glass problems, the Engineering Construction Command and participating units started from the source to ensure that design requirements, appearance and various indicators remain unchanged. They modeled, analyzed, designed and adjusted the curvature of glass to adjust hyperbolic glass to single-curved or flat glass. For deviations that cannot be solved, they adjusted glass section products by adding spherical connecting plates to ensure that deviation adjustment can be accomplished by rotation of section products.

The West Fourth Pier project is located between T1 and T2 terminals at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and is an important part of Phase III expansion project. After completion of Phase III expansion project construction, the T1 and T2 terminals will be connected into one entity to form Baiyun Airport’s first terminal area.
