Shenzhen Airport’s third runway is now open

In order to meet the growing demand for flights, the construction of Shenzhen Airport’s third runway is steadily underway. Recently, with the final closure of the reserved channel hole, the offshore dike of the expansion project of Shenzhen Airport’s third runway has been successfully closed and has anti-wave shelter conditions, which provides strong support for the subsequent construction of the main structure of the project. The offshore dike is more than 7400 meters long and is a key project for the expansion of Shenzhen Airport’s third runway. It protects and supports the internal structure of the project from being invaded by seawater and waves. Its construction is one of the major technical difficulties in the project construction.

In response to this problem, the project construction team divided the offshore dike into four blocks for simultaneous construction, fully guaranteeing the safe and smooth passage of Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway. At the same time, through full coordination and communication with all parties involved in construction and competent authorities, the navigation capacity of Xiashan Creek has been increased to 1,000 tons, which greatly solves the problem of restricted construction vessels.

Highlights of Shenzhen Airport’s third runway project:

  1. Improve Shenzhen Airport’s guarantee capability
  2. Can take off and land all kinds of large aircraft
  3. Built on reclaimed land

After completion, it will further enhance Shenzhen Airport’s ability to serve regional development in Greater Bay Area and jointly build a modern comprehensive transportation system in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area with major transportation infrastructure such as Shenzhen-Zhongshan Channel and Shenzhen-Maoming Railway under construction. At the same time, the construction of this project is also conducive to giving full play to the synergies of various modes of transportation, promoting economic and social integration development on both sides of the Pearl River in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, promoting the construction of world-class urban agglomerations and airport clusters in Greater Bay Area, and helping China’s “Belt and Road” initiative.
